With Paralympics SILVER SUHAS LALINAKERE YATHIRAJ also an IAS officer

Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj is an Indian professional Para-Badminton player currently ranked world No.2 in Men’s Singles and Silver Medalist in SL-4 category in Tokyo Paralympicis 2021. Suhas has made history as first ever IAS officer to win a medal at the Paralympics. Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj when he steps into court for the badminton finals. Even though he loses and wins silver, 38 year old District Magistrate of Gautam Budd Nagar (Nodia).

Suhas, currently world No.3 in SL4 category, has played three matches, including the semifinals, in the ongoing games. He has been at his dominating best against his rivals. While it took him less than 20 minutes to sail through the first two matches, Subha outwitted Indonesia’s Fredy Setiawan 21-9 21-15 in 31 minutes in the first semifinal.

Suhas has also served as the District Magistrate of Prayagraj. He became National Champion after winning Gold Medal in Men’s singles category at 2nd National Para Badminton Championships held at Varanasi in March 2018.

TOKYO OLYMPICS

At the 2016 Asian Para Badminton Championships, Beijing, China, he became the first Indian bureaucrat to win a professional International Badminton Championships. He won gold beating Hary Susanto of Indonesia in the finals when he was serving as District Magistrate of Azamgrah. He came to International attention when he won gold and became first ever serving Indian bureaucrat to represent and win a medal for India at global level.

Suhas had lost to Mazur, who was three times gold medal in European Championships as well as was in qualifying group A match but the Indian made a great effort and did a lot of hard work in the final match against his world No. 1 opponent.

“So I’m little disappointed that I didn’t finish it off because I had a handsome lead in the second game. But congratulations to Lucas. Whoever played better is the winner.” In SL4 class, shuttlers have lower limb impairment/serve and they play standing.

From getting up at 2am to give a wake-up call to her husband in Tokyo to receiving congratulatory messages from the world over, Ritu Suhas says these will be memories for lifetime for her. Her bureaucrat husband Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj banged the silver medal at Paralympics badminton in Tokyo, Japn. In doing so, 38-year old district magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar (Nodia) also became the first ever IAS officer to have not only participate in Paralympics but also made through it and won SILVER medal for the nation.

“We all are proud of him. Whatever he has done is a live example for all of us. It was an impossible attempt, I believe. Wins and losses are part and parcel of life but the way he put in all his efforts is what I am going to remember forever,” Ritu, who is an additional district magistrate in Ghaziabad, told PTI.
