Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is a Indian weightlifter. She won silver medal in Tokyo Olympics in Women’s 49kg category. She has won various medals at Commonwealth Games. She was awarded the Padma Shri by government of India for her participation in sports. She was also awarded with Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna by Government of India in 2018.
She also won the silver medal in 48kg category in 2014 commonwealth games, Glasgow; she went to break world and won gold medal at the 2018 edition of the event held in Gold Coast. Earlier to 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she won a GOLD MEDAL at World Weight Lifting Championships held in Anaheim, California.
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu was born on 8 August 1994 in Nongpok Kakching about 30km away from Imphal city, Manipur. She was born to a Meitei family. Chanu connected herself as a follower of Sanamahism but not an extremist because she needed prayer of everyone. Her family is her strength, as they identified it when she was 12. She would roam around carrying a huge bundle of firewood home when her elder brother find hard to just pick one.
From lifting some firewood when she was young to being aerial to international championships, athlete Saikhom Mirabai Chanu’s story is one of the remarkable and inspiring rises. She started her international career at the age of 20, when she earned the Silver Medal in the 48kg category at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

Afterwards, at the national trials for the Rio Olympics 2016, Mirabi Chanu broke 12 year old national record held by seven time World Championships medallist Kunjarani Devi and got her place in the Indian team for the games. The record aside, her total of 192kg at the selection trials would position her as a contender in Rio Olympics.
Chanu won silver medal in Tokyo Olympics in the 49kg category with a total weight of 202kg, becoming first Indian to win a silver medal in Olympics and second weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic medal. Aftermath of Tokyo Olympics Chief Minister of Manipur N. Biren Singh declare an award of rupees 1 crore for her. Indian Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced an award of rupees 2 crores, a promotion and many more.
